Book Description:
Stalking and restraining orders are a thing of Alayna Pierce’s past. With her MBA newly in hand, she has her future figured out – move up at the nightclub she works at and marry the manager, David. He’s perfect for her because, although he’s attractive, he doesn’t get her all turned inside out and upside down like some other men have. It’s a safe plan, one that assures she’ll remain in control of her obsessive love disorder.
But what Alayna didn’t figure on is Hudson Pierce, the new owner of the nightclub. He’s smart, rich, and gorgeous – the kind of guy Alayna knows to stay away from if she wants to keep her past tendencies in check. Except, Hudson’s fixed his sights on her. He wants her in his bed and makes no secret of his plans to seduce her. Avoiding him becomes impossible after he offers a business proposition Alayna can’t turn down and she’s drawn further into his universe, unable to resist his gravitational pull.
Soon Alayna’s charmed by Hudson in every way possible and the control over her old behaviors slip. When she learns Hudson has a dark history of his own, she realizes too late that she’s fallen for the worst man she could possibly get involved with. Or maybe their less than ideal pasts give them an opportunity to heal each other and finally find the love their lives have been missing.
4.5 hot steamy and sexy stars
Alayna has had issues in the past that she is still struggling with, but she has an underlying strength that shines through in her thoughts and actions from the very beginning of this story. She is an intelligent woman graduating with an MBA from NYU and she has business sense- I enjoyed her as a heroine. She has vulnerable moments, but you can see her mentally slap herself and pull it back together, seeking help when she needs it. She knows her triggers, and she tries her best to live within her limits which has led her to only enter into “safe” relationships over the past few years where she knows she will not be tempted to get too attached if she really doesn’t have strong feelings for the guy.
But Hudson is a force to be reckoned with, and Alayna really wants to take the chance on getting to know him. Hudson is a rich businessman and a hot, dominant alpha male on top of it all. He believes that he is incapable of love and lives his life devoted primarily to his work with casual sexual relationships worked on the side as a convenience. He also has a difficult past and believes that a casual relationship is the best that he can expect. He is immediately drawn to Alayna, and as they spend time together, he helps her see that they can actually help each other with their past experiences providing a common ground for understanding each other.
After meeting Hudson’s mother Sophia and Alayna’s brother Brian, I would like to drop them both off on a deserted island to see who would emerge victorious- or maybe they could both stay there permanently, that would work for me too! Seriously, what a b*tch and an a**hole! There were some great scenes between Alayna and Sophia- Alayna’s first encounter with her set the tone of their relationship, and it was fantastic! Things didn’t get any better between them as the story progressed, and after one particular scene around the 90% mark, I wanted to high five Alayna and buy her a drink. I am hoping that we will get to see a similar scene between her and Brian down the road.
Throughout all this, Hudson’s “friend” Celia is lurking on the sidelines. I am still not sure what I think of her character; right now I am leaning toward her having an ulterior motive that has not yet shown itself but we will have to wait for the 2nd book to find out for sure.
The only thing that annoyed me a little with this story is Hudson’s endearment for Alayna when they are alone. He calls her “precious”- for some reason all I could think of is a certain movie about a particular ring with a creepy little character saying “my precious”- AACKK!! That was an unwanted visual while reading their scenes, but that’s what I get for being a movie and classics geek- yikes!
They definitely have much more to their story that is waiting to be told, but this book leaves off in a good place where I am ok with waiting for the next one to be released sometime this fall. I have found a new book boyfriend and his name is Hudson- go grab a copy and meet him yourselves ladies!
A few of my favorite quotes from the book:
“God, I was already in trouble. He didn’t make it into the Oh, fuck category of attractive men for nothing.” - Alayna
“I apologize for overwhelming you. That wasn’t my intent. But I want you to know that whether or not you decide to help with my situation, I will continue to seduce you. I’m a man who gets what he wants. And I want you.” - Hudson
“I’m drawn to you, Alayna. Not because I want to hurt you or make you feel a certain way, but because you’re beautiful and sexy and smart and, yes, a little crazy, maybe, but you’re not broken. And that makes me hopeful. For me.” - Hudson
“I hurt people. Deeply. But that was before. Less than ideal pasts, remember? It doesn’t mean it defines our future. Or even our now.”- Alayna
About the Author
Laurelin Paige is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Mad Men and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Adam Levine. She is represented by Bob Diforio of D4EO Literary Agency.
